Structure of Food Web and Interactions, 7/8/12-8/8/12

Next, we had to settle for what food web we wanted. Initially, we had decided on the following food web:

However, after re-reading the characteristics of Planet Zork's Tundra Biome, we had to address the need for a detritivore or decomposer in the food web, since nutrient cycling (where dead matter is decomposed into simple nutrients) is slow in the tundra biome.

Therefore, this is our 2nd and final food web we used:

Note that my carnivore had now changed to the decomposer/detritivore.

Yi Wai’s plant → Charis’s herbivore → Zi Fang’s Carnivore → Natasha’s omnivore

Swathi’s fungi →  Sumana’s herbivore → Zi Fang’s carnivore → Natasha’s omnivore

Yi Wai’s plant → Natasha’s omnivore

So it becomes something like this:

Yi Wai’s plant → Natasha’s omnivore

There were also a few characteristics we all had to agree with so that we could create our organisms without having to deal with many problems.

These are the main characteristics we finally agreed upon:

~ Swathi’s fungi (on land) and Yi Wai’s plants (in water) - Rate of reproduction is faster than the consumers

~ Charis’s herbivore (in water, feeds on aquatic plant) - camouflage, can hold breath for a long time to hide from predators.  30 km/h

  • ~Zi Fang’s carnivore (on land and in water) - night vision, can hunt in water and on land, speed 60km/h

  • ~Sumana’s herbivore (on land, feeds on fungi) - moves in herds for protection 30km/h

~Natasha’s omnivore (mostly on land but can swim in water) - strong, powerful legs (to pounce on the carnivore), camouflage etc speed: 80km/h

Keeping this in mind, we soon started on sketching our organisms and putting our thoughts into action.
